Joe Biden reveals his “walk away” from re-election option
In a just-released interview with US journalist, Ed Gordon, Joe Biden revealed his “walk away” option from the upcoming US presidential elections. A snippet of the interview – courtesy of CBS News – where he reveals his option, is at the end of this post.
As of now I’m the first person to pick up the significance of what he has stated. No doubt others will soon follow though.
So exactly what did Joe Biden say that was so significant?
When asked what it would take for him to re-evaluate his decision to run for re-election Biden stated, “If the doctors came to me and said, you got this problem or that problem…”
There you go. That’s his out.
His out? Let me explain.
In the last Strategy Lesson I discussed 4 strategy moves revealed in the popular country and western song, The Gambler. To refresh your memory, the 4 moves are:
- Hold
- Fold
- Walk away
- Run
These are not the only strategy moves at your disposal. Other moves include tit for tat, head-to-head and flanking.
What is walk away?
Walk away is a decision to no longer play the game. To retire. To walk off into the sunset. To play another game completely.
Walk away is the move that Joe Biden has just signaled.
For Joe Biden, walking away on doctor’s orders gives him a softer way out. As opposed to being publicly kicked out or mutinised out.
Behind the scenes Joe Biden may indeed get kicked out by the Democratic party inner circle. But publicly, he could exercise his walking away on doctor’s orders option.
The walking away on doctor’s orders option allows Joe Biden to control the timing of his exit. He may implement this option tomorrow. Or next week. Or next month. Or possibly never.
Regardless of when he exercises it, Joe Biden now has the walk away on doctor’s orders option up his sleeve.
But he better hurry.
Up until last week, Joe Biden’s strategic position was quite weak, especially after the presidential debate.
Now it has weakened 10X in the aftermath of the assassination attempt on Donald Trump.
That media coverage of a bloodied Donald Trump defiantly raising his fist in the air after the assassination attempt failed? At that moment Donald Trump showed America and the world just how much of a warrior he is. Even I got goosebumps.
How can Joe Biden compete against that?
In combative team sports like rugby, we often call ourselves soldiers and when we go onto to the field to play a game, we liken it to going into battle.
When on the rugby field of battle, we follow and fight alongside leaders who lead from the front. Leaders who don’t shy away from adversity and who show tremendous courage when under fire.
Let’s say you had two captains to choose from before you went onto the field to play an important game of rugby. One was Donald Trump. And the other was Joe Biden. Who would you choose?
Now, let’s play this choice out to the US presidential elections. Who would you choose?
I know who my choice would be if I was a voter. And it wouldn’t be some doddery old geezer who often looks lost while he’s walking around and also has trouble stringing two sentences together when speaking.
